Van Insurance

Van insurance, also known as commercial vehicle insurance or commercial van insurance, covers your van in case of an unforeseen incident. A valid van insurance cover is a legal requirement if you intend to use or leave a commercial vehicle weighing up to 3.5 tons in gross vehicle weight on a public highway. However, a commercial van insurance policy can also provide cover for vehicles up to 7.5 tons in gross vehicle weight.

The owner of a commercial vehicle may have more vehicles to meet his business or transport needs. Thus, it may be a better idea to opt for fleet insurance to cover all these vehicles together.

Types of Van Insurance

Van insurance can be categorized into the following types:
  • Small van insurance: This insurance is typically for vehicles used for carrying small loads. Suzuki Carry and Daihatsu HiJet come under this category.
  • Car derived van insurance: This insurance is for vehicles that carry small loads. Vehicles included in this insurance category are the Ford Fiesta Van and Vauxhall Corsavan.
  • Light van insurance: Vehicles, such as the Citroen Berlingo and Renault Kangoo, are insured under this type of van insurance.
  • Medium van insurance: This type of insurance is available for vehicles carrying small to medium loads. Vehicles under this category include the Mercedes Vito and the SWB Ford Transit.
  • Large van insurance: This insurance includes vehicle that are typically long wheel based vans, such as the Mercedes Sprinter and the LWB Ford Transit.

Van Insurance Cover: Options

Van insurance comes in three different levels of cover:
  • Third party only cover: This is the most basic van insurance and covers liability for death or bodily injury to a third party (including other occupants of your vehicle). Your liability for damage to third party property is also covered under this insurance.
  • Third party fire and theft cover: This insurance covers you against third party risks. In addition, your vehicle is also covered against the risk of fire and theft, based on the relevant policy terms. You may also receive cover for the contents of the vehicle.
  • Comprehensive cover: This includes cover for third party theft and fire and loss or damage to your vehicle due to malicious intent or accident. This cover also includes personal accident benefits if you sustain an injury or die.

Check out the offerings of as many van insurance companies as you can before you zero in on a policy. This will ensure that you find the best deal possible.
