To avoid late fees on your credit card, pay your bill more often. Make it a practice to pay your bill twice a month. Grace periods are not as long as they once were. To cope with a shorter grace period you need to get into a practice of paying your bill often.
If the due date for payment is not good for you then contact the credit card company and request a date that is easy for you to remember and/or one that coincides with your pay days. You also might want to request a date that fits in well with the other bills you need to pay on a monthly basis.
