For people with a Baltimore credit card account, they should be pleased to know that in the past few years, new technologies have been developed and launched that make wireless commerce safer and more secure.  With identify theft and credit card fraud at an all-time high, which is more of the larger cities throughout the country are getting on board to make being a credit cardholder more positive and beneficial.

In fact, some officials are taking proactive steps to deal with the problems that people with Baltimore credit card accounts are facing.  For this, officials are keeping the public current on changes and new technologies, but also providing viable information pertaining to the prevention of card fraud and identify theft.  We wanted to mention some of those tips since they are extremely helpful for people around the world.

In October of 2009, Baltimore honored the National Project Your Identity Week with information disseminated by Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler.  Since this problem affects so many people with a Baltimore credit card account, lawmakers and the Attorney General felt this was the ideal opportunity to educate the public so they would have a better means of self-protection.

Just as new technologies have been developed that benefit people with a Baltimore credit card account, fraudulent activity has also used technology as a way of getting cardholder’s personal information.  Once that happens, the thieves can use the card number and the cardholder’s name to do a tremendous amount of damage, not just financially, but to the person.  Identify theft and card fraud can destroy a person’s credit history, making it nearly impossible to every again have the pleasure of buying power that comes from an excellent credit score.

·    Anyone with a Baltimore credit card account, bank account, and/or savings account needs to shred every piece of information and documents instead of tossing them in the trash.  Most people are unaware that credit card statements and other documents have names, account numbers, phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers, and more!

·    In addition, every person in the country should order a current credit report from all three reporting agencies to include Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.  Since creditors can use one or all three of these agencies, a person’s credit and personal information may be on one, two, or all three reports.  In addition to the individual looking at his or her Baltimore credit card and bank account information, mistakes are also found on balances, payment history, address, length/place of employment, and even spelling of the person’s name, which must be reported so the credit bureau can make appropriate corrections.

·    Additionally, no matter how convincing someone is on the phone or the person they are claiming to be, consumers should NEVER provide personal or financial information, specifically information for a Baltimore credit card account, bank account, social security number, and name.

·    When using an ATM to make a deposit, withdraw money, or check balances, people should look for any type of skimming device.  Information on what these scamming devices look like can be found online through Google, which is something everyone should know.  Sadly, a person with a Baltimore credit card account using an ATM with one of these devices attached could end up with the entire balance being used, as well as the checking/savings account wiped out.

·    When shopping online and making a purchase with a credit card, people should look for an “opt-out” option for credit card offers and junk mail.  If not, the individual’s name, address, phone, and email address would be shared with other companies online, which means more people now have the opportunity to research that person and steal his or her identity.
