At present rate of cigarette tax of Texas is $1.41 and this coupled with increasing rate of federal cigarette taxes is proving to be quite a burden for payers of tax in Texas. This information regarding tax at Texas has been provided by office of Texas Comptroller.
In addition to conventional Texas tax on cigarettes residents at certain areas in that state like Beaumont also pay additional sales taxes for cigarettes. At present rate of this tax is 8.25 percent. Texas Comptroller has also stated that residents of Beaumont have to pay Texas tax on sales at a rate of 6.25 percent.
Texas tax reports have confirmed that rates of taxes would also increase in case of other tobacco based products. For example tax that is taken for tobacco that is chewed would go up to 50.33 cents for every round from 19.5 cents for every round. Taxes imposed on cigars would go up to 40 cents per cigar from a nickel.
These Texas tax increases in case of cigarettes have found support from advocates of public health and awareness. They said that they are hoping this rise in Texas taxes on cigarettes would lead to decrease in consumption of cigarettes across various age groups especially among younger lot.
However, there are other ways in which this Texas tax increase has been reacted to. Kenneth Young Jr. who is owner of Young’s Tobacco Store at Port Neches has retorted that these raises in tax rates would not be able to cut down on cigarette consumption to a significant extent in that state.
He said that there would only be a negligible amount of slowdown as far as his store and others are concerned – one that would not be enough to affect his business prospects or smokers of cigarettes for that matter.
