Maine Tax

A number of Maine tax payers are presently in favor of lower rates of taxation. These citizens also wish to see more justification as far as ME tax structure is concerned. At state legislature of Maine a number of proposals of tax of Maine are doing rounds.

As per these proposals of tax in Maine tax relief worth in excess of $75 million is in order. This relief package of tax at Maine would be provided to families living in this state. This particular Maine tax bill is being viewed as a follow up of work that had been done earlier in this regard by Maine tax committee.

This Maine tax bill is known as LD 1088 and was passed on March 17th 2009. As per this proposal rate of income taxes at top should be reduced to 6.5 percent from 8.5 percent. According to this bill it has also been proposed that for 90 percent of people living in Maine a form of household tax credit could be provided so that rate of effective tax could come down at under 6.5 percent.

It is expected that if rates of Maine tax on income could be reduced it would bring in more workforce in this state. It is also assumed that these people would then pay their income taxes in Maine itself.

At present rate of Maine tax on income is among highest in USA but with introduction of these changes it would come down to a more middle level. A number of tax incentives and deductions are also being considered by tax authorities of that state. They are hoping that this would improve business scenario in that state.

It is being speculated that tax payers would be provided a choice of Maine tax structure between itemized credits and standard credits. This would make sure that every income group in that state receives a deduction in rates of income taxes. This choice would be provided on basis of reductions on returns of federal taxes. This LD 1088 bill is supposed to have no effect on tax revenue as it would increase rate of taxes that are to be paid by non residents of this state.
