Roads

All parts of the state are well connected by road, with a road length of 1,50,876 kms in 2000-01.

Buses ply between Jaipur and all sub-divisional towns and also between the larger towns and neighbouring states. There are a number of luxury coaches plying, at regular intervals, between Jaipur and New Delhi.

Private sector participation in roads and bridges is encouraged.
The four laning of NH-8 has been completed from Jaipur to Kotputali. The work of four laning of Kotputali to Haryana Border section is being done by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

To give a fillip to road construction, the State Government has formulated a policy on Road Construction.
Institutional finance and private investment on a Build, Operate and Transfer basis is also being attracted on a much larger scale for the construction of bridges and bypasses, in which the payback of investment will be through collection of toll tax.

Twelve National Highways pass through the State. These Highways connect the State to major cities, ports and industrial centres such as Delhi, Indore, Ahmedabad, Kandla, etc. Also, the State has around 9,000 kms of State highways and 5,800 kms of major district roads.
Rajasthan is also inviting private participation in roads in a big way.

Water Resources

A major development achievement of Rajasthan is its transformation from being a desert state. Shifting sand dunes have been checked, drinking water facilties have been created, agriculture has prospered and industries have bloomed. The development of the State's water resources has gone a long way in bringing about this transformation. Extensive irrigation reservoirs and conveyance systems have been developed.

Utilization of Water Potential in the State

Utilizable surface water resources 30.36
Sources outside the State 14.5
Total surface water potential 15.86
Water potential harnessed/being harnessed 8.35

Railway

There are several trains that run between the larger towns of Rajasthan and cities in the neighbouring states. The cities of Rajasthan are now integrated with the national broad gauge network and direct trains now link Jaipur to cities like Mumbai, Calcutta, Kanpur, Delhi, Lucknow, Chennai (Madras) and Indore.

The other cities in Rajasthan on the broad gauge track are Ajmer, Alwar, Bharatpur, Bikaner, Chittaurgarh, Ganganagar, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Kota, Nagaur and Swaimadhopur.

Gauge conversion from metre to broad gauge (one-third of the countrywide gauge conversion programme) is under way in several parts of the State and will aid in better connectivity with the neighbouring states. No transhipment is now required for goods travelling to the east and south of Rajasthan.

Airports

With the landing of the Jaipur-Dubai inaugural flight of the Indian Airlines on 7th February, 2002, the State now figures on the international aviation map. This was the first international flight from the recently upgraded Jaipur airport. The daily service between the two cities started from 12th February. The Indian Airlines, 145-seater Airbus A-320 takes off from Jaipur in the morning; the return flight from Dubai starts in the afternoon. With this, Jaipur has become the fifteenth city in India to be connected to the Gulf. Connectivity with Dubai was a long-standing demand of the people of Rajasthan.

With this flight, travel for Rajasthanis in the Gulf would become much easier and convenient. The daily flights would also give a boost to industrial and tourism sectors of the State. With this sound beginning, Jaipur would come up as an important international airport in North India, to cater to the tourist traffic.

Jodhpur, Udaipur and Kota are the domestic airports.

The Rajasthan State grid, as on March 2001, had access to approximately 4,000 MW of installed power capacity.

As in the rest of the country, telephone connections are available on demand under the "Tatkal" scheme for a premium. Direct Dialling facilities, both domestic and international, are available in over 400 towns in the State including all district centres and larger towns. Facsimile and telex facilities are available at all larger towns. Paging and cellular phone services are available in the city of Jaipur and would soon be available in other major cities of the State. Electronic mail services are available in Jaipur. As in the rest of the country, it was expected that a private operator in basic telecom services would commence operations in the State by the end of 1997.
