POWER AND ENERGY
Arunachal Pradesh is extremely rich in hydroelectric power potential. In fact with an estimate of over 30,000 MW the state ranks first in the country in terms of hydroelectric power potential. At present, Arunachal Pradesh is the state having highest nos. of high head mini and micro hydel projects in India. The state has 37 nos. of power plants ranging from 5KW to 4500 KW with a total installed capacity of 23.8 MW and firm power of 16.5 MW.

Against firm generation of 16.5 MW, the peak requirement to load centres covered by network of transmission and distribution system is 75 MW.
The short fall is therefore 58.5 MW. However the most of the peak demand is met out of diesel generation. In the state, 94 nos. of diesel generating stations ranging from 10 KW to 500 KW capacity are functioning with a total capacity of 18.5 MW .
There are another 21 nos. of projects with total installed capacity of 76.25 MW is targeted for completion in 9th plan to bridge the demand supply gap.
North Eastern Electric Power Corporation and Brahmaputra Board has taken up several steps for setting up some mega hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh. Ranganadi Hydel Power project with a total installed capacity of 405 MW under NEEPCO is likely to be completed by the end of 2002.
Some other projects like Kameng hydro electric power project (600MW), Subansiri hydro electric power project (4500 MW), Siang hydro electric power project(2000MW) and Damwe hydro electric power project (600MW) identified by NEEPCO, Brahmaputra Board and Central Water Commission are all in initial stage of survey and investigation.
If, Central govt. and some public and private sectors take initiatives for setting up some mega and medium hydro electric power projects in Arunachal Pradesh, then Arunachal Pradesh can definitely fulfill a major requirement of power in the North East as well as India.
