July 26 - Southern California Edison (AMEX: SCE-pB) secured the top rank for having the most solar-generated electricity in its energy mix as of the end of 2007, according to a report released on July 24 by the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA). The top ten utilities included Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE: PCG), Nevada Power, Sierra Pacific Power, San Diego Gas & Electric Co, Xcel Energy Co (NYSE: XEL), Arizona Public Service Co, Salt River Project and Tucson Electric Power Co. Out of the top ten positions, California utilities held five ranks in the survey of more than 50 US utilities by SEPA. The public power utility that ranked the highest was Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, California, followed by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, California and Long Island Power Authority, New York.

“Based on recent announcements and internal discussions with utilities, SEPA anticipates that utilities will quickly become the largest and one of the most important customers for the solar industry," said Julia Hamm, Executive Director of SEPA.

Southern California Edison led the ranking both in terms of overall solar capacity (MW) and solar capacity per customer (MW/customer). The company may not be able to hold this position for a long time, given the recent announcements of solar plants in the industry. On the customer side of the meter, Pacific Gas & Electric secured the numero uno position for both the amount of overall solar capacity and MW per customer. Xcel, ranked fifth in the survey, is Colorado’s largest power utility, with about 1.3 million customers in the state. The company has been awarded the top spot for the past three consecutive years by the American Wind Energy Association for the amount of wind-generated power on its system.

“These top ten rankings highlight solar-leading utilities that have put significant efforts into facilitating what have traditionally been customer-based solar solutions,” said Mike Taylor, Director of Research at SEPA. “Several US utilities, some of whom aren't in these rankings yet, are positioning themselves to be the solar industries largest and most innovative customers,” Taylor added.
