While health insurance in some states is complex, in the state of Michigan there is nothing complicated about it.  If you have Michigan health insurance you are among a fortunate group of people but if you are among the more than 1.4 million people in this state without health insurance, chances are you do not get proper preventative care or quality emergency care.  Sadly, Michigan was hit hard by the downward economy, which has left many people without jobs but also without employer provided Michigan health insurance.

However, even people working for small companies or those who are self-employed are among those without insurance coverage.  Another trend seen specific to Michigan health insurance is that for some people that can afford it, they focus their money on other things, making insurance a low priority.  For instance, a couple that both worked might experience one losing a job, taking the household from two incomes to one.  In this scenario, even if insurance coverage was provided through the remaining employer, chances are good the couple is going to pay off debt, focus on making the house/car payments, and so on, which results in coverage being reduced or dropped completely.

While being in a situation of not having Michigan health insurance is frightening, people need to know that state programs are available in many cases.  For instance, to ensure that the children of Michigan are being provided with proper healthcare, a special type of Michigan health insurance is provided.  Known as MiChild, this unique program is provided to working families that have children without insurance coverage.  In addition, the state has another program specifically designed for pregnant women known as the “Healthy Kids Program.”

Due to concern over the growing number of people without Michigan health insurance, Medicaid has recently loosened income requirements.  This means for people that did not qualify before because of making too much money might be able to get this type of Michigan health insurance now.  Within Medicaid are a number of excellent programs for health insurance but also for food and child/elderly care.  Yes, it would be great for everyone to be working and have outstanding coverage through the employer but it is important to be grateful for government programs that can help during these tough economic times.

Now, for people that cannot qualify for government assisted Michigan health insurance and are not provided with insurance coverage through the employer, other possibilities for getting insurance exist.  In this case, some insurance companies provide options for short-term insurance coverage, which would for six months or less.  The concept here is that during the six-month period, permanent employment that offers Michigan health insurance would be secured.

Anyone needing Michigan health insurance must make decisions.  1For this, individuals need to decide how much they would be comfortable paying for insurance premiums.  Of course, the higher the deductible and copayment the better since premiums would decrease.  Typically, people that seldom see a doctor would benefit most from lowering deductibles and copayments but this would be something for everyone needing Michigan health insurance to consider.  Other considerations include the age of people needing coverage, any special needs, prescription coverage, and major illness or injury.
