Venture Capital Jobs

Venture capital jobs require an impressive academic record, along with strong market awareness and business modeling skills. Therefore, venture capital jobs are best-suited for chartered accountants and managers who have worked in highly competitive sectors.

Moreover, some positions in venture capital firms require prior experience in private equity, investment banking or financial consultancy. Strong interpersonal skills, an entrepreneurial outlook and the ability to work effectively in teams are also vital for a successful career as a venture capitalist.

Venture Capital Jobs: Description

A venture capital professional is usually involved in the following tasks:

·        Financial analysis.
·        Financial modeling.
·        Evaluating investment opportunities.
·        Identifying key opportunity areas.
·        Evaluating risks associated with an investment.
·        Attending various meetings to get business pitches.
·        Interacting with clients, advisers and bankers.
·        Conducting market research to evaluate the clients’ competitors and the market demand for their products or services.
·        Executing deals.

Venture capital jobs also require continual learning to identify “unnoticed” lucrative investment areas. Therefore, venture capitalists review and analyze various business magazines and trade journals to keep abreast of all information.

Venture Capital Jobs: Positions

Although the job titles are not uniform for every firm, common venture capitalist positions include:

·        Venture partners: They are responsible for bringing-in potential investment opportunities, and are typically compensated on the basis of deals acquired by them.
·        Entrepreneur-in-residence: They specialize in a particular domain and are hired by venture capital firms on a temporary basis to develop startup ideas of host firms.
·        Principal: This is a mid-level venture capitalist position, which is generally considered a ‘partner-track’ position as principals are often promoted to venture partners after a few successful years.
·        Associate: This is usually an apprentice position. An associate may eventually move up to a ‘senior associate’ and ‘principal’ position if s/he performs well. Associates often have 1-2 years of experience in related fields, such as management consulting and investment banking.

Venture capital jobs require great decision making power. It also has excellent growth prospects, as a venture capitalist can branch out into other fields, such as investment banking and top-level management. However, acquiring venture capital jobs is not easy as the industry is relatively small and concentrated.
