A tax accountant helps businesses as well as individuals prepare their taxes. Some tax accountants specialize in the individual domain, such as income tax, corporate tax and sales tax. Usually, the need and work load of tax accountants is the highest during the end of the financial year, when taxes have to be filed. Important functions performed by a tax accountant are:

  • Maintaining records of clients’ properties, including their appreciations and depreciations.
  • Tracking and filing expense vouchers, for claiming deductions.
  • Researching about and tracking regulations and deregulations.
  • Communicating with clients about all tax-related issues.

In addition, tax accountants provide advice to their clients to ensure that they take full advantage of legal tax deductions.

Tax Accounting Prospects

A tax account can select from the following employment opportunities:

  • Work for an accounting firm, which prepares accounts of different organizations.
  • Work as a staff member in a company.
  • Set up private tax accounting practice.
  • Work as a freelancer, providing tax filing assistance to individuals and small businesses.

Tax accountants have ample advancement opportunities, which include moving into auditing positions and even senior management.

Tax lawyers or tax attorneys assist individuals and organizations resolve complex legal tax issues. Other services offered by tax lawyers are:

  • External-audit assistance
  • Removal of liens
  • Reduction of fines

  • Setting up stock portfolios and trust funds.

Tax Lawyers Training

The minimum educational qualification for becoming a tax lawyer is usually a four-year college degree, along with a three-year law school diploma. Most tax lawyers opt for a degree in accounting at the undergraduate level. Like all lawyers, tax lawyers must be members of a requisite Bar Association. Since taxation is a dynamic field, where laws keep changing frequently, the training of tax lawyers is an ongoing process.

Besides these tax jobs, an individual can also opt for specialized tax consulting and tax compliance jobs.
