UK Finance Jobs: Post 2008 Recession

In the UK, finance jobs saw a continuous decline in 2008 and the first quarter of 2009. The situation began to improve in the second quarter of 2009. According to a quarterly survey published in the first week of September and conducted by recruitment firm Manpower, the finance sector in the UK will witness a rise in headcount in the fourth quarter of 2009.

According to Morgan McKinley, with an increase in employment prospects in the financial sector, the average annual salary rose to £53,223 in July 2009, representing 6% month-on-month growth.

In the second half of 2009, the salary for investment bankers remained the same, with a marginal rise in the basic pay in companies that began to hire. The annual salary for analysts rose from £50,000 to £55,000.

UK Finance Jobs: Financial Services

The financial services sector in the UK was hit hard by recession in 2008. The impact continued in 2009, with more than 24,000 workers losing their job in the first quarter.

The demand for finance graduates and interns showed good signs in 2009. Some of the leading financial services companies in the UK are:
  • Watson Wyatt Worldwide
  • Barclays Bank
  • Lloyds TSB
  • HBOS PLC
  • HSBC Investment Bank
  • Nationwide
  • The Royal Bank of Scotland Group
  • Financial Services Authority

UK Finance Jobs: Entry Level Eligibility

The entry level criteria in finance and banking jobs have become strict. Apart from degree certificates in specific subjects, employers are laying emphasis on the skill level as well. Companies test candidates on business awareness, resilience, problem-solving abilities, commitment, communication skills, time management, numerical ability, the ability to relate to others, leadership potential, cultural awareness and interest in customer services. Some companies also observe the attitude of the candidates towards current practices.

Further training, undertaken on a part time basis, also plays a crucial role in building one’s career. It is not surprising that well qualified and trained finance student can grab a job with a salary starting at £35,000.
