The duties of financial managers vary with their specific titles:
  • Controllers: In this job, you will be
    • Supervising the preparation of financial reports, such as income statements and balance sheets.
    • Analyzing future earnings or expenses to forecast the organization’s financial position.
    • Overseeing the preparation of special reports required by regulatory authorities.
    • Managing the accounting, audit and budget departments.
  • Treasurers andfinance officers:
    • Formulate the organization’s budgets in order to meet the company’s financial goals.
    • Oversee the investment of funds.
    • Manage risks associated with the investments.
    • Supervise cash management activities.
    • Execute capital-raising strategies to support the expansion of their firm.
    • Handle mergers and acquisitions.
  • Credit managers: As a credit manager, you will be:
    • Supervising the issuance of credit.
    • Establishing criteria for credit rating.
    • Determining credit ceilings.
    • Monitoring the collections of past-due accounts.
  • Cash managers: These managers monitor and control the flow of cash receipts and disbursements in order to meet the business and investment requirements of a firm.
  • Risk and insurance managers: As a risk or insurance manager, you may have to:
    • Oversee programs to minimize risks and losses arising from financial transactions and business operations.
    • Manage the organization’s insurance budget.

 

Finance Manager Jobs: Work Environment

Finance managers usually work in a comfortable environment and typically have access to state-of-the-art computer systems and information services. They often work closely with the top management.
 
Most financial managers are required to attend meetings of financial and economic associations. They may also have to visit subsidiary firms or meet customers. The finance manager jobs usually stretch for long hours, up to 50 or 60 per week.
