Current Interest Rates, Current Interest Rate

Current interest rates play a critical role in the selection of a financial instrument. The term ‘current interest rate’ is highly dynamic and varies with the changing economics of a state.

Factors that influence current interest rates are:

  • Prevailing economic condition

  • Capital market situation

  • The demand and supply cycle
  • How to Obtain Current Interest Rates?

Searching for current interest rates on investments and on loans is similar. This is because giving a loan to a person represents an investment opportunity for a lender. An individual can search for current interest rates through the following sources:

    • Contact the nearest bank or local credit union. All financial institutions base their interest rates on the prime interest rates. However, the rates offered by various institutions differ because they determine the current rate of interest based on the fiscal policy and market dynamics.

    • The Internet has enabled investors to search and compare current interest rates across various organizations. Most banks have a web presence and release electronic documents on their website with information on current interest rates. Based on the frequency of updates, these websites display current interest rates for each financial instrument they offer.

    • Current interest rates offered by various financial institutions under the government can be found by visiting the website of the central bank.

Current Interest Rates: Nominal versus Real Interest Rates

To estimate the actual interest benefits, current interest rates can be divided into nominal and real interest rates:

The nominal interest rate is the rate of interest payable to a lender or an investor. The real interest rate takes into account the impact of inflation. Inflation erodes the purchasing power of money and the same nominal interest rate would spell lower returns for an investor in case inflation is high. That is when the relevance of real interest rates comes into play. These rates eliminate the impact of inflation and reflect the actual yield to a lender and the real cost of funds to a borrower.

The more risk an individual is willing to take, the greater is the potential to get higher returns. This is a general rule to consider when making any investment.
