Australia Health Insurance (Health Insurance Australia)

Good health is one of our best assets in life which is why we need to control how we manage health. In this context, the Australia health insurance sector is governed by a comprehensive state-funded healthcare program, which is called as ‘Medicare.’

Medicare is a part of Australia health insurance, but there is a limited range of medical cover. This means that those who want better financial cover can opt for private health insurance in Australia. Individual, family and group healthcare plans are available in the Australia health insurance sector.

Public Australia Health Insurance

Medicare was introduced in 1984 as part of Australia’s public healthcare system. It provides affordable but high-quality healthcare services to all citizens. It is funded by tax income and small healthcare deductions from individual incomes. Simply put, Medicare provides free treatment at public hospitals for all. This includes specialized medical treatment which is either free or of subsidized cost.

The Medicare policy covers expenses such as hospital accommodation, intensive care, diagnostics, implantation surgery and pharmaceuticals. It excludes ambulance fees, cosmetic surgery or any medical expenses incurred outside the country.

Private Australia Health Insurance

Private health insurance providers cover all those medical services which are excluded by the Medicare policy. It offers extended medical cover to Australians. It lets them decide whatever services and facilities they want to avail under the private Australia health insurance cover. Three specific categories are included as follows:

  • Hospital cover: This covers expenses at public or private hospitals and includes doctors’ fees, drugs and diagnostics.
  • General treatment cover: This includes dental treatment, home nursing, physiotherapy and contact lenses.
  • Ambulance cover: Private insurance companies can either pay or reimburse ambulance charges.
  • Australia health insurance is covered under tax deductible, regardless of the amount of insurance, income of insured person or the tenure of the policy. The rebate applies to the policy’s total premium amount and the government provides a minimum of 30 percent rebate with every private health insurance plan.

A good idea would be to identify exactly what your medical needs are before you opt for Australia health insurance. Vital factors to consider include lifestyle, budget, age and relationship status. Using this information, go ahead and decide what type of Australia health insurance suits your requirement.
