Florida Health Insurance

Florida health insurance is regulated under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Individuals can either qualify for state healthcare policies or buy a private healthcare plan. With several insurance companies offering a wide range of Florida health insurance policies, choosing the best policy is a challenging task.

Florida Health Insurance: Types of Plans

Florida health insurance includes the following:

  • PPO plans: Preferred Provider Organization plans are among the most popular plans in Florida. They provide affordable rates and the flexibility to reimburse medical bills of almost any medical practitioner. However, the policy offers most benefits when the policyholder seeks medical services from networked practitioners.
  • HMO plan: With no deductibles, Health Maintenance Organization plans offer the lowest prices. However, they are less flexible than PPO plans. It pays to use medical services from networked doctors only.
  • POS plan: Point of Service plans offer combined benefits of HMO and PPO. It means that one can seek medical services from outside the network doctors at a relatively lower price than you can with HMO.
  • FFS plan: Fee for Service plans or indemnity healthcare reimburses all medical bills irrespective of the source of billing. Hence, it allows you to see any doctor and use the services of any hospital.
  • Florida Health Insurance: Medicaid Program

The Florida Medicaid program offers healthcare services to Florida residents who qualify the low-income eligibility requirement. Beneficiaries of the Florida Medicaid program include low-income families, children, disabled people and senior citizens.

Florida Medicaid provides different levels of coverage, depending upon the age of the insured individual, the type of program and services offered by the primary care provider. Florida Medicaid services include expenses incurred on hospitalization, medical tests, nursing, family planning and dental checkups. Unlike in many US states, a Florida Medicaid program covers expenses on prescription drugs.

Types of Florida Health Insurance Policies

Most people in Florida are covered under a group health insurance plan offered by the employer. An employer can choose from HMO or PPO plans, as both provide good coverage at reasonable rates. However, employers can consider health savings accounts (HSAs) as another viable option to health insurance policies.

At the individual level, a policyholder can buy either family or individual Florida health insurance. S/he can choose from any of the above mentioned plans based on personal insurance needs and the affordability factor.

One can also buy customized Florida health insurance policies for senior citizens and students.
