Disability Insurance Individual

Disability insurance individual is an insurance policy offered to an individual who is not enrolled by the employer. Disability insurance individual is more costly than group disability insurance. Not many disability insurance companies offer an individual disability insurance policy to the public.

Disability Insurance Individual: Types of Coverage

One can choose from the following covers under a disability insurance individual plan:

  • Individual disability insurance guaranteed non cancelable: Under this type of individual disability insurance plan, an applicant's medical history, occupation and proof of income are taken into consideration prior to approving the application form.
  • Insurance individual disability non traditional policy: This type of individual disability insurance plan is meant for those who are not registered with the worker's compensation. The individual disability insurance non-traditional policy was launched in 1934. Since then, the policy has undergone several changes for the benefit of the insured.
  • An individual disability insurance non-traditional policy does not cover certain diseases, like stress, depression, fatigue, excessive burn out, nervous and mental ailments and anxiety. However, people seek to buy a disability individual insurance non traditional policy for availing tax benefits.

Why Disability Insurance Individual is Expensive

A disability insurance individual policy is more expensive than group insurance. Here’s why:

  • Under an individual disability insurance policy, each risk needs to be separately underwritten. The cost involved in underwriting each risk is very high.
  • The cost of billing premium, for group disability insurance policyholders under one contract is easier and less time taking. While the entire cost of an individual policy has to be borne by a single person.
  • The premium of individual disability insurance is level during the entire term of the policy. Comparatively, group disability insurance is determined by a person's age and is calculated at the anniversary of each group disability insurance policy.
  • Individual disability insurance policyholders are in an advantageous position in terms of the portability factor. In case of a group disability insurance plan, an individual is registered with the employer. Not all employers provide long term disability coverage. In case the individual wants to go for another job, the portability of an individual disability insurance policy is a very big advantage.
  • In case of individual disability insurance, there are fewer restrictions for the eligibility criteria. However, in a group disability insurance policy there are more restrictions to qualify for cover.
