Modified Car Insurance

Modified car insurance tends to be slightly more expensive than company manufactured or ‘standard’ cars. This is because insurance companies consider modified cars riskier. According to insurers, any car that has an alteration in its standard factory conditions is a modified car. As the guarantee of the car gets void at the time of the modification, car insurance companies tend to avoid or charge a lot higher to cover modified cars.

However, one fact that is not considered by insurers is that the modification could be for better as well. It could be a better exhaust system, air filtering system or any other beneficial modification that enhances the performance of the car.

Modified Car Insurance: A Tough Ordeal

Getting modified car insurance gets tougher with an increase in the extent of modification. There are various reasons for this:
·        Modified cars become too flashy and thus prone to theft: Cars prone to theft are considered to be a risky option for insurers. With more bling under and over the hood, getting modified car insurance therefore becomes difficult.
·        Engine modifications are generally done for racing: Racing cars have more probability of accidents and therefore insurers prefer to stay away from them.
·        The modified accessories may be of lower quality and the risk of them breaking and getting dismantled is higher. For insurance companies, insuring such cars will mean more claims.
·        Modifications could increase the need for maintenance of the car as well and may force the owner to miss a premium.

There are various other reasons that underline the high risk factor that modified cars represent, which is why insurance companies prefer not to insure these cars. However, if the application is made in clear terms, mentioning the type of modification, the chances of getting an economical modified car insurance deal can increase.

How to Locate the Best Modified Car Insurance Company

The process largely remains the same as that for standard cars. Simply search online for modified car insurance providers, compare their prices and call them. Do not forget to mention the advantages of your modifications if any and always mention the complete details of the modification.

Alternatively, one can approach the insurance agents or brokers, who can suggest the best modified car insurance providers.
