Passengers onboard any airBaltic flight will be able to purchase a specially designed Mini Cooper R56 during their next flight with the Latvian airline, after the company announced on Monday of its intention to branch out into car dealerships.

“airBaltic is the world’s first airline to start selling cars on board. Naturally, we still believe that flying is smarter than driving whenever possible, and that is why we will offer the airBaltic Mini in a stylish aircraft livery, chosen by the most active of our 60-000-plus Facebook fans,” said the carrier's German chief executive Martin Gauss in a statement quoted by The Baltic Course.

The limited edition model of the Mini Cooper R56 will be available for purchase aboard all airBaltic flights from December 16th 2011 until January 15th 2012.

Passengers wishing to purchase the 24,699 euros ($33,048) car will first need to make a deposit of 50 euros ($67) while in midflight, before completing the purchase through the airline’s when they land.

Interested passengers will also be invited to see the car in real life and take a test drive before choosing his/her payment or leasing options.

airBaltic operates a fleet of 34 aircrafts from the Latvian capital of Riga, together with flights from the capitals of its neighbouring Baltic states Estonia and Lithuania.

The airline was subject to a bitter ownership battle earlier this year, which resulted in the Latvian state upping its stake in the company on December 1st from 52 percent to 99 percent.

Apart from being the world’s first airline to start selling cars on board, airBaltic is also the world’s first national flag carrier airline to be marketed as a low-cost airline.

The full specifications of the Mini Cooper R56 are available online at the airline’s inflight website.
