Since its initial conceptualisation during the early 1980s, SMS text messaging has now become the most widely used data application in the world, with 2.4 billion active users, or 74 percent of all mobile phone subscribers.

In 2010, 6.1 trillion SMS text messages were sent worldwide, averaging up to 193,430 SMSes sent per second. In addition, SMS has become a massive commercial industry, with its worth valued at over US$81 billion as of 2006. However, did you know that SMSes are also changing the lives of people living in developing economies? The impact is not just in their phones, but in their wallets as well. In Afghanistan, police officers managed to receive a 36 percent increase in their salaries, thanks to the implementation of an SMS system for their wages.
