The Energy Efficiency Standards, working under US Department of Energy analyzes economic and environmental aspects of energy use in both United States and globally. The group decides energy efficiency standards for various energy devices used in United States. Core competency of the group extends from assessing new technology, making demand modeling, cost-benefit assessment, variability analysis, marginal energy price analysis, and analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Through its powerful set of capabilities, it makes project analysis on energy saving potential standards on various products as follows:
- Home appliances and equipments
- Office equipments
- Plumbing products
- Electric motors
- Distribution Transformers
- Commercial Air conditioning, and
- Commercial and residential lighting
Apart from this, Energy Efficiency Standards holds expertise in following areas:
Making cost benefit analysis (Consumer, manufacturer and environment)
- Assessment of Technology
- Modeling and forecasting of commercial energy
- Analyzing marginal energy prices for commercial and industrial sectors
- Distributional and market analysis including use of GIS
- Analyzing efficiency standards and labels worldwide
- Analyzing global residential energy demand
Energy Efficiency Standard setting process:
The Energy Policy and Conservation Act (1975) has established energy-conservation program for important household appliances and sets efficiency targets.
In the year 1978, National Energy Conservation and Policy Act (NECPA) also authorized U.S. Energy Department to set compulsory energy-efficiency standards for some household products.
In 1987, the NECPA was updated by the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA).
NAECA also set first national efficiency standards for home appliances.
