The International Energy Agency or IEA assumes huge importance in the context of environmental sustainability and energy security. The member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) come under the domain of the International Energy Agency. The IEA serves as the energy policy advisor for its 27 member nations. The IEA’s energy efficiency measures attempt to promote the concept of clean energy among the citizens of the member countries. Established in the year 1974, the International Energy Agency played a crucial role to tackle the supply emergencies during the 1973-74 oil crisis. With the changing energy scenario of the world, the role of the International Energy Agency has also changed over time.
At present, the IEA is fully committed towards promoting the “Three E” strategies of balanced energy policy. The “Three E” implies strategies for assuring economic development, energy security, and environmental protection. Collaboration of energy technology, policies to prevent adverse climatic change, and market reform are some of the focus areas of the International Energy Agency.
With its renowned statisticians from the 27 member nations and nearly 190 energy experts the IEA carries out a number of research programs on efficient use of energy.
As per the recommendations of the International Energy Agency, the G8 countries are required to implement a suite consisting of 12 measures for energy efficiency. This package is based on Gleneagles G8 Plan of Action, which in turn makes it mandatory to take the initiatives for clean energy policy.
Some of the major recommendations of IEA are as follows:
- As per the IEA’s recommendation, residential and industrial appliances need to fulfill the energy efficiency standards. The networked and individual appliances should also get into the low-power mechanically.
- The energy-efficient lighting technology is highly cost-effective from the perspective of energy efficiency. The use of energy-inefficient incandescent bulbs needs to be restricted.
- To ensure energy efficiency in industries the dependability, timeliness, and coverage of industries’ energy consumption needs to be checked.
- IliEA also attempts to promote construction of low-energy houses. The building codes need to fulfill the strict energy efficiency prerequisites.
- The governments are required to be more proactive to support and promote different energy efficiency initiatives. The energy efficiency policy agencies should also get the necessary encouragement from the governments.
