The Project was started as a partnership between the United Nations Environment Program and the World Bank. The UNEP Risoe Centre or URC also played a crucial role in the formation of this partnership program. Many other organizations that are committed towards conservation of energy and environment have participated in the energy efficiency initiatives of the 3 Country Energy Efficiency Project.
The 3 Country Energy Efficiency Project was funded by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) and the United Nations Foundation. The Asia Sustainable and Alternative Energy Program provided the necessary fund to support the complementary activities of the 3 Country Energy Efficiency Program.
The population of these three developing nations accounts for a significant percentage of the total world figure. The growth rates of population for India, China, and Brazil are also higher than the other nations of the world. As a result the energy requirements of these countries are also pretty high. According to the experts, if the energy consumption rates of India, China, and Brazil continue to increase at the same pace, then within the coming 20 years these three countries will require more than twice the energy than what they are using at present. Accordingly emission of greenhouse gas will also increase by multiple times. The increasing requirement of fossil fuels by India, China, and Brazil has been a major issue in the recent times.
The 3 Country Energy Efficiency Project focuses on the fact that by making cost-effective investments for creating energy efficient infrastructure, all these three nations would be able to maintain the same pace of development while incurring considerably lower environmental, social, and economic costs.
The 3 Country Energy Efficiency Project helps to make the best possible use of the energy resources and potential of these three nations. For the purpose, the project ensures effective implementation of various strategies for energy efficiency.
