Whereas fixed telephone lines and television channels used to be good indicators of the connectedness and openness of an economy, today the number of internet users, and the speed of their connection, has become the most important measurement of global integration, together with mobile phone penetration. By focusing on economic liberalisation tied to the rollout of transportation, internet and cellular infrastructure, some emerging economies have managed to leapfrog to near-advanced status in a matter of years.
