The Syrian economy is led by the oil and gas and agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and farming sectors. Higher crude oil and gas prices, countered declining oil and gas production led to higher budgetary and export receipts. Its economy remains highly controlled by the state. Long-run economic constraints include declining oil and gas production, high unemployment and inflation rates, rising budget deficits, and increasing pressure on water supplies caused by heavy use in agriculture, fisheries and farming, rapid general populace growth, industrial growth, and water pollution.
