Northern Mariana Islands economy benefits substantially from financial aid from the US. The rate of funding has declined as locally generated government earnings have grown. The tourist industry, predominated by Japanese tourists, is important to its economy. The agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and farming sector is made up of cattle ranches and small farms producing coconuts, breadfruit, tomatoes, and melons. Garment production is by far the most important industry with significant shipments to the US under duty and quota exemptions.
