El Salvador's economy has traditionally been agricultural, but services and industry now employ a greater percentage of the workforce. Although the smallest nation in Central America, El Salvador has the third largest economy in its region. The Salvadoran economy continues to benefit from a commitment to free markets and careful fiscal management. The economy has been growing at a steady and moderate pace since the signing of peace accords in 1992. Privatization of its industries including telecom, energy and financial services markedly expanded opportunities for US investment in the country.
