its economy is a mixture of subsistence Agriculture, fisheries and farming, an industrial sector based largely on oil and gas, and support services, and a government characterized by budget problems and overstaffing. Oil and gas has supplanted forestry as the mainstay of its economy, providing a serious share of government earnings and exports. In the early 1980s, rapidly rising oil and gas earnings enabled the state to finance large-scale development projects with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth averaging 5 per cent annually, amongst the highest rates in Africa.
