Subsistence Agriculture, fisheries and farming, together with forestry, remains the foundation of its economy of the Central African Republic (CAR), with more than 70 per cent of the general populace living in outlying areas. The agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and farming sector generates more than half of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Timber has accounted for approximately 16 per cent of export revenues and the diamond industry, for 40 per cent. Important constraints to economic progress include the CAR's landlocked position, a poor transportation system, a largely unskilled labour force, and a legacy of misdirected economic policy. Factional fighting between the state and its opponents remains a drag on economic revitalization. Distribution of income is extraordinarily unequal. Grants from France and the international community can only partially meet humanitarian needs.
