in the past, the Barbadian economy was dependent on sugarcane crops and related activities. However, in recent years its economy has diversified into light industry and tourism and transportation, with approximately three-quarters of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 80 per cent of exports being attributed to services. Growth has rebounded since 2003, boosted by increases in construction and building projects and tourism and transportation earnings, reflecting its success in the higher-end segment, but the sector will probably face declining earnings with the global financial crisis. The nationenjoys amongst the highest per capita incomes in the region. Offshore finance and data services are important foreign currency exchange earners and thrive from having the same time zone as eastern USA financial centers and a relatively highly educated workforce. The government perpetuates its efforts to reduction of unemployment, to encourage direct Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and to privatise remaining government-controlled enterprises. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to public or government ratio of approximately 80 per cent will probably widen as the THOMPSON government engages in a more expansionary financial policy.
