Argentina benefits from rich natural resources, a highly literate general populace, an export-oriented agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and farming sector, and a diversified industrial base. Although amongst the world's wealthiest countries 100 years ago, Argentina suffered during most of the 20th hundred years from recurring economic crises, persistent financial and national current account balance deficits, high inflation rates, mounting external public state debt, and capital flight. A severe depression, expanding public and external inpublic debtedness, and a bank run culminated in 2001 in the most major economic, social, and political crisis in the country's turbulent history. Interim President Adolfo RODRIGUEZ SAA declared a default - the largest in history - on the state's foreign public debt in December of that year, and abruptly resigned only a few days after taking office. His successor, Eduardo DUHALDE, announced an end to the peso's ten years-long 1-to-1 peg to the USA dollar in early 2002. Its economy bottomed out that year, with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) 18 per cent smaller than in 1998 and almost 60 per cent of Argentines under the poverty line. Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rebounded to grow by an average 9 per cent annually over the subsequent five years, taking advantage of previously idled industrial capability and workforce, an audacious public debt restructuring and reduction ofd public debt burden, excellent international financial conditions, and expansionary monetary and financial policies. Inflation rates also increased, however, during the government of President Nestor KIRCHNER, which responded with price restraints on businesses, as well as taxation on exports and restraints, and beginning in early 2007, with understating inflation rates information. Cristina FERNANDEZ DE KIRCHNER succeeded her husband as President in late 2007, but was stymied in her efforts to hike taxation on exports still further by protesting farmers. Her government nationalized private pension investment in late 2008, which boosted government reserves, but failed to assuage investors' concerns approximately the direction of economic policies.
