The economy of Afghanistan is recovering from ten yearss of war. Its economy has improved markedly since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001 largely because of the infusion of international aid, the recovery of the agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and farming sector, and service sector growth. Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth exceeded 7 per cent in 2008. Despite this, landlocked Afghanistan is extremely still poor and highly dependent on foreign aid - likely more so than ever. Economically, it is dependent on agriculture, fisheries and farming, and trade (imports and exports) with neighbouring countries, with opium poppies taking primacy in both sectors. Growing poppy crops and an expanding opium trade (imports and exports) generate approximately US$3 bn in illegal economic activity and looms as one of Kabul's most major policy concerns. The opium trade (imports and exports) gives income to millions of poor, but also aids fund insurgents and generates instability in the country and on its borders. Afghanis perpetuate to suffer from shortages of housing, clean water, electric power, medical care, and jobs. Criminality, insecurity, and the state's inability to extend the rule of law to all parts of the nation, despite USA and Nato backing, pose problems to future growth of the economy. It will likely take the remainder of the ten years and continuing donor aid and attention to markedly raise Afghanistan's living standards from its current level, which are among the lowest or cheapest internationally. International pledges to support Afghani reached US$8.9 bn, although not all of that has come in. While the international community remains committed to Afghanistan's development, Kabul will need to overcome a number of problems, and it is far from certain that the Taliban and various regional warlords will come to control some or all of the country, even after years of military intervention. Other long-term problems include employment creation, corruption (including cronyism and nepotism), government capability, energy supplies, transportation and rebuilding war torn infrastructure and facilities.
