The Croatian economy is the most advanced of the former Yugoslav states, and is dependent on the services sector which contributed 65.7 percent to GDP in 2010.

Croatia's industry sector also plays an important role in the economy, accounting for 28.1 percent of activity, while agriculture only contributes 5 percent.


Croatia Industry Sectors

Croatia’s industrial production growth rate was down 3.9 percent in 2010. However it is well developed and includes:

  • chemicals and plastics 
  • machine tools and fabricated metal
  • electronics
  • pig iron and rolled steel products, aluminum, paper, wood products and construction materials
  • textiles
  • shipbuilding
  • petroleum and petroleum refining
  • food and beverages
  • tourism

Tourism in Croatia attracts over 10 million foreign tourists annually.

Tourists are estimated to contribute almost €7 billion annually and generate enough employment opportunities that the country has been able to decrease its unemployment at an annual rate of 7 percent.

However, the tourism industry in Croatia took a beating in the during the 2008 recession, when the unemployment rate jumped from 13.7 percent to 15.2 percent.

As far as trade is concerned, most exported commodities are industrial products.

Be it transport equipment, textiles, machinery, chemicals or fuels, the industrial sector helps the nation in getting foreign exchange and decreasing the trade deficit that the country has long suffered from.

Croatia’s industry sectors also play a crucial role in helping the nation come out of debt.
