Individuals can acquire a free credit report - no credit card required - from the official FTC website, annualcreditreport.com. Though there are a large number of websites that claim to offer free credit reports without any credit card information, they are a precarious option and susceptible to scams.

Free Credit Report - No Credit Card Required: Information Requirement

 

For acquiring a free credit report without furnishing a credit card number, individuals have to provide identification details. This includes personal data, such as name, date of birth, address and social security number. Individuals will also have to verify confidential credit information, including:

·        Amount of monthly mortgage payments

·        Provider of mortgage

·        Details of loan on vehicle(s), if any

These questions are designed to verify the authenticity of the applicant. Individuals might also have to furnish basic credit card information, although they will not be asked their credit card number.

 

Free Credit Report - No Credit Card Required: Required Time

 

If a free credit report is ordered online, without any credit card information, it can be accessed immediately. However, if the request is made through phone (using the toll-free number), it generally takes 15 days for the report to reach the destination. Similarly, acquiring a credit report copy by mailing the annual credit report request form will take approximately 15 days.

However, the credit report procurement may take longer if there is any doubt about the information contained in the same. The verification process generally varies from company to company. Moreover, bear in mind that if a free credit report request without credit card information is denied, the individual will be notified by the credit bureau(s).

Free Credit Report - No Credit Card Required: Limitations

 

An individual might be able to acquire a free credit report without providing credit card information. However, s/he will be unable to:

·        Get the credit score.

·        Acquire identity theft protection.

·        Request credit monitoring services.

·        Set up credit score alerts.

·        Apply for merged or 3-in-1 credit report.

Ensure that once you acquire a free credit report, save it in your personal computer or removable ports. This way you can access your credit report status anytime, as it may not be available online after the initial inquiry.
