Clean Credit Report

A clean credit reportis an asset for individuals who seek financial assistance. However, due to varied reasons, a credit report may have errors and incorrect charges that you need to clean before it goes for evaluation. Maintaining a clean credit report, thus, requires a good payment history and an alert periodic inspection of your credit report.

How to Maintain a Clean Credit Report

There could be many reasons for a bad credit report, such as bankruptcy, high balances, late payments and others. The best way to avoid a bad credit history is to change your financial habits, i.e., borrowing less or in proportion with your payback capabilities. Here are a few ways to maintain a clean credit report:
·        Pay off debts: This does not include home mortgage but includes credit card balances and similar credit. Do not let too many creditors be present on your credit report.
·        Make payments on time: Even if you pay the whole balance after the due date, the delinquency reflects badly on your credit history. Therefore, make payments on time or take permission from the creditors to make it after the due date.
·        Pay more than the minimum payment: Paying more than the minimum payment increases your credit rating.
·        Try to use your credit facilities regularly: Credit agencies evaluate your credit activity. Therefore, it is important that you use them periodically. The trick is to use the credit card for purchases that you can afford otherwise and make the payments immediately. This increases your credit rating.

Sometimes a derogatory notation on your credit report may negate all the effort that you put in to maintain a clean credit report. This could happen due to clerical mistakes or faults at the creditors’ end, who forwarded incorrect information. Correcting such problems may take time but are necessary nevertheless.

Take the following actions to correct errors:
  • Highlight the errors and send a letter to the credit agencies as well as to the creditors, asking for corrections.
  • Ask the credit agencies to send the updated (corrected) report to all the people and organizations that have enquired about your credit report in the last six months.

Following these simple steps, without the need of hiring professionals, will ensure a clean credit report that will help you in getting financial support as and when you need it.
