Hong Kong credit cards or HK credit cards come in different variants according to the credit needs and financial soundness of the individual. After 2000, Hong Kong’s economy has seen tremendous growth in credit card usage. It is on the path to becoming a cashless economy much like the US economy.

Financial convenience offered by plastic money has led to the growing popularity of Hong Kong credit cards. Integration of credit cards with internet technology to provide e-commerce solutions has further propelled their usage.

Visa dominates the credit card market in Hong Kong and American Express is the leader in the cash card industry. According to a report published by Visa Inc in 2004, a Hong Kong family has four credit cards on an average. There were 8.8 million credit card accounts and 71% of them were Visa accounts in 2004. The report also highlights an increase in credit card usage by 7.7 percent in the same year. This amounts to 41 million transactions per financial quarter.

Hong Kong credit cards are available through all commercial banking and thrift institutions. Some of the major Hong Kong credit card providers are:

  • Citibank: Citi provides Hong Kong credit cards in association with Visa. It offers exclusive reward programs to attract customers. These reward programs include gift coupons, points, cash back and monthly special gifts to select customers.

  • Standard Chartered: Some of the credit card products from Standard Chartered are the Visa Infinite card, Titanium credit card, Shop 'n Gain credit card, ESPRIT Smart credit card and American Express card.

  • HSBC: This bank offers the classic, gold and platinum credit cards from Visa and the Premier credit card from MasterCard. The HSBC green credit card is an exclusive initiative by the bank and Visa Inc. The points earned with purchases through this credit card are used for environmental causes.

  • American Express: The company offers exclusive credit cards for individuals, small businesses and corporate houses. American Express cards come with extended purchase limits and a range of other rewards.

  • Manhattan credit card: Manhattan offers lifestyle credit cards with special programs for travel, movies, music, dining, shopping and clubbing.
