International Credit Card

An international credit card can be used for purchasing goods and services in countries other than one’s country of residence. The issuer of an international credit card grants the card holder a line of credit from which one can borrow money in his/her own country and abroad.

International Credit Card: Application

To start with, conduct a research on the various options available. Compare the credit limits, grace periods, interest rates and cash advance schemes.

To apply for an international credit card, one needs to fill an application form. For this, one can apply by calling up the toll free number of the credit card company or by filling in the online application form. Ensure that you check the preconditions for applying. Documents such as address, identity proof, driving license and social security number are required. Usually, there is no prerequisite of having a minimum bank balance or an account in a specific bank.

After filling in all the details, double-check the information that you have provided. Read the privacy statement carefully before you submit the form or click on the ‘apply’ tag.

International Credit Card: Benefits

Owning an international credit card has the following benefits:

  • One can conduct overseas purchases online. International credit cards can be used for e-commerce transactions.
  • A customer who uses an international credit card for purchases in the UK and US can track down the dealer if the goods are undelivered.
  • An international credit card offers higher level of security, since most transactions are signature based.

International Credit Card: Limitations

Using an international credit card for shopping abroad is a great option. However, sometimes, the foreign transaction fee charged by the card company gets too overwhelming. This happens especially with frequent travelers and shoppers.

To avoid this, one must check the exchange rate offered by the card company before applying for an international credit card. Also, consider the airline fare benefits and other special packages that suit your traveling pattern the best. It is best to opt for a card with low foreign transaction fees.

One can apply for multiple international credit cards but the discretion to grant them lies with the credit card company or the issuer. The company needs to ensure that the applicant has a sound financial background before approving the application.
