Larsen & Toubro



Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is a conglomerate with interest in industrial automation, construction, engineering products and systems, information technology, shipbuilding, and construction. Larsen & Toubro is ranked #961 in 2008 Forbes Global 2000 list of companies.

Larsen & Toubro is listed among most respected companies in India. Though more famously known for its engineering and construction activities, L&T has commendable presence in technology, manufacturing, and IT sectors. Its integration capability is not restricted to India alone. L&T has overseas manufacturing facilities in Gulf and China. This company believes in progress through harmony and community welfare. Protection of environment is a major concern and is part of Larsen & Toubro's corporate vision.

Brief history
Two Danish engineers, Henning Holck Larsen and Soren Kristian Toubro, set up L&T in Bombay (presently Mumbai) in 1938. It began as an importer of machineries from Europe, but soon diversified into construction and engineering. During World War II, Larsen & Toubro began repairing and fabricating ships in their newly formed Hilda Limited. In 1950, with a paid-up capital of INR 2 million, L&T became a public limited company. During that year Larsen & Toubro recorded a sales figure of INR 10.9 million.

Product and services
Products and services of L&T is categorized into:

i)Heavy engineering;
ii)Engineering and construction;
iii)Electronics and electrical equipments;
iv)Industrial products;
v)Information technology.

World’s largest continuous catalyst reactor, largest fluid catalytic cracking refrigerator, and largest tubular reactor were manufactured by L&T. Larsen & Toubro also has distinction of manufacturing world’s longest LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) pipeline, and longest product splitter. L&T also constructed India’s first open sea jetty, first indigenous hydro-cracker reactor, and India’s widest range of low tension electrical switch-gears.

Financials
In financial year ended March 2008, L&T achieved sales of around US $4.68 billion and profits worth about US $0.52 billion. Assets amounted to US $5.72 billion in same period.

Awards and recognition


  • Amity Corporate Excellence Award was conferred for research in 2006 by Amity International Business School.
  • Engineering Export Promotion Council of Kolkata awarded ‘National Top Exporters Trophy’ to L&T in 2006.
  • ECC division of L&T Limited was awarded IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award in 2005.
