Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is a premier engineering and manufacturing public sector undertaking in India. In Fortune Global 2000 list of companies, BHEL occupies 1012th place.

BHEL with over 40 years of existence is specialized in manufacturing more than 180 items under 30 categories which include transportation, power generation and transmission, telecommunications, renewable energy, and industrial machineries. BHEL comprises 14 manufacturing units, 18 regional offices, 8 service centers, 100 project sites, and 4 power sector regional centers.

Brief history
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited is a government enterprise established in 1962 with its headquarters located in New Delhi. BHEL is certified with ISO 9001 ‘Quality Management System’, ISO 14001 ‘Environment Management System’, and OHSAS 18001 ‘Occupational Health and Safety Management System’ certifications. Bharat Heavy Electricals has also installed a power generation capacity of 90,000 MW (mega watt).

Products and services
Products of BHEL can be categorized into industrial machineries, power, electrical transmission, transportation equipments, research and development products, and non-conventional energy.

Industrial machineries manufactured by BHEL include compressors, capacitors, industrial motors and alternators, solar photo-voltaic panels, power semiconductors, diesel generating sets, steam turbines, steam generators, turbo generators, seamless steel tubes, and soot blowers.

Power machineries of Bharat Heavy Electricals among other products include hydro power plant, boilers, gas turbines, pumps, electrostatic precipitators, air pre-heaters, fans, and fabric filters.

BHEL manufactured transmission machines comprise switch-gears, capacitors, insulators, control shunt reactors, dry-type transformers, bushings, power semiconductor devices, HVDC (high voltage direct current) transmission systems, and control relay panels.

Financials
Asset worth of BHEL, recorded as on 2008 March, was about $5.17 billion. Profits earned between April 2007 and March 2008 amounted to about $0.56 billion from sales totaling nearly $3.99 billion. BHEL currently employs about 42,600 people.

  • BHEL in 2008 received Engineering Export Promotion Council’s (EEPC) top export order for 18th year in succession.
Current financial crisis
Global financial crisis has forced BHEL to postpone its project of developing 8 units of 800 megawatt power generation facilities till 2011.
