If you live in Toronto or have plans to move to this city of over three million people then you may want to apply for a Toronto credit card. Credit cards can come by way of banks where you can apply for a Visa or MasterCard or you may wish to fill out an application for a Capital One card or an American Express card. If you already have a major credit card then applying for one through a department store might be something to consider if you are looking to purchase a large ticket item such as furniture or a major appliance.

In Toronto a credit card is used the same way it is everywhere else. You can use it to make purchases both online and off. It is important however to understand how to be responsible with your credit card. Most people do not automatically know how to use credit because it is not something we are born understanding. Here are some don’ts when it comes to using a Toronto credit card:

-    Keep your credit card at home or tucked away in your wallet when it comes to making ordinary everyday kinds of purchases such as going out to lunch, buying a new shirt or picking up groceries for supper. Substituting your Toronto credit card for cash could develop into a bad habit which could lead to debt.

-    We all want nice things for ourselves but do not be seduced by the thought that a credit card is free money and then spend it on items you cannot afford. This is living a borrowed lifestyle and it will eventually catch up with you! Do not abuse your Toronto credit card in this manner.

-    When you receive your credit card bill every month there will be an area that tells you what your minimum monthly payment is. Do not just pay that amount! If you cannot pay off your balance in full every month then pay as much as you can. If you pay only the minimum required then the purchases you have made suddenly become even more costly. It will take even longer to pay off the total and in the mean time you will be paying more interest on your Toronto credit card. Don’t let this happen to you! Be smart.

-    Some people decide that they are not going to use a credit card anymore so they close it out. This is not always a smart idea as it can adversely affect your credit score. Refrain from closing out a Toronto credit card if you still carry a balance on it. Also if you have not established much of a credit history yet then closing it out would be a bad idea.
