The School was founded in the year 1949. Today the School provides courses upon economics, geography and sociology. In the year 1993, the Center for Development Economics was created in the department. The institute deals with the programmes upon the graduate level as well as the MA and Phil levels.

The three broad streams upon which the institute has its advantage are as follows

Economic theory,
Quantitative methods, and
Economic applications including both theory and quantitative methods.
