Social Sector development plays a significant role in a developing and emerging economy like India. In the same direction, the Government of India has come forward with more investments in the sector. The Government programmes such as National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, National Rural Health Mission, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, Mid day Meal, Integrated Child development services, Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission have helped a lot in thedevelopment of the Social Sector of the India’s Economy.
As to the Economic Survey 2006-07, India’s progress in the social sector is slower. As to the Survey, the Central Government expenditure on social services has increased at a faster pace over the years. The expenditures have increased from Rs. 18,240 crores in 1995-96 to Rs. 87,607 crore in 2006-07 (BE).
Survey points out that availability of resources along with proper implementation among the States will faster social sector development in the country’s economy. Good governance and qualitative services through public action can provide the best result in the social sector development.
