Based in Edinburg, Scotland, Bank of Scotland is a commercial and clearing bank dating back to the 17th century. It is the second oldest bank in the United Kingdom and the only surviving financial institution created by the parliament of Scotland. Bank of Scotland also has the feat of being the first bank in Europe to have printed its own banknotes. The bank continues to print sterling banknotes. The bank is under a legal arrangement with the UK government, which allows it to issue currency. The bank has been taken over by Lloyds TSB, as of January 19, 2009.
