In 1991, a two tier banking system was introduced whereby the National Bank of Moldova started acting as the central bank of the country. However, the bank is not a commercial bank and hence, not involved in commercial activity. The bank is responsible for authorization, supervision and regulation of financial institutions’ activity in the country.

The National Bank of Moldova is playing an important role in the Moldova’s transition to a market-based economy. Since its establishment the bank has worked and implemented several measures with a view to ensure the stability of the monetary and credit environment. The National Bank also coordinates with the central bank with the broader aim of realizing its objectives and initiating measures to implement such cooperation. The Bank is also responsible for informing the public periodically about macroeconomic analysis, financial market evolution and statistical data.
