National Assembly of Bhutan passed the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan Act in 1982. Under this law Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan (RMA) was being established. The RMA is an autonomous body dealing with the financial and monetary business in the country.

The authority aims at maintaining the internal stability in the country both in the monetary as well as fiscal level. For this the bank undertakes many new initiatives for the banks and other financial institutions in the country.



It has immense contribution to the economy of Bhutan. A smooth running financial market largely helps to the country's economy.

The important functions of the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan are as follows:

  • Acting as the sole authority of issue of notes and coins;
  • Acting as the banker to the banks and the government;
  • Acting as the advisor to the Government; and
