The reserve bank of Malawi is the central bank of the country. The bank was established in the year 1964 and started its operation in the year 1965. Since then the bank has been operating with an aim of strengthening the monetary and financial system of the country.

Important responsibilities of the bank are as follows:

  • Issuing the bank notes and currencies
  • Implementing the monetary policy
  • Promoting the exchange rate
  • Regulating the country's payment system
  • Supervising the activities of the bank

The bank has full mandate for conducting the monetary policy while the fiscal policy remains a domain of the Ministry of Finance in the country.
