The National Bank of Slovakia is the central bank of the Slovak Republic. The bank was established on 1 January 1993, on the basis of the provisions of the National Bank of Slovakia Act.

The main mission of the bank is to promote a continuous non-inflationary economic growth, and a well developed and constantly evolving financial sector. The primary objective of the Bank of Slovakia is to maintain price stability in the country. In the pursuance of its objectives, the bank undertakes following activities:

  • Working towards ensuring monetary stability and a sound financial infrastructure in the country
  • Maintaining and promoting the internal and external value of the currency
  • Promoting credit and exchange conditions necessary for a healthy and balanced growth of the economy
  • Issuing, distributing and controlling the circulation of notes and coins in the country
  • Formulating and implementing the monetary policy in the country
  • Acting as the banker and advisor to the government on economic, financial and monetary matters
  • Managing the domestic and financial debts of the country
  • Acting as custodian and manager of the country’s foreign exchange reserves
  • Acting as a banker to the country’s commercial banks
  • Supervising the activities of the country’s banks and other financial institutions
  • Representing the Slovak Republic in international money market transactions

The supreme governing body of the bank is the Board of Directors. The board is responsible for conducting and formulating the monetary policy and framing rules on monetary measures. As per the provisions of the act on the basis of which the bank was founded, the bank is not allowed to take up loans either for its own account or for the account of third persons.
