Montserrat is a lush mountainous island located in the Caribbean Sea. The Island is sometimes also referred to as Emerald Island. Volcanic eruptions, which began in 1995, have severely affected the economic advancement of this small and open economy. A further catastrophic eruption in 1997 crippled the economy causing economic and social disadvantages. However, assistance from different quarters has come forward with the UK launching a three-year $122.8 million aid program to help the economy’s revival. The GDP (PPP) as per 2002 estimates was $29 million.
