The Bulgarian National Bank, which is the central bank of the country, was being founded in the year 1879. It is one among the oldest central bank over the world.

The important functions of the bank are as follows:

  • Issuing currencies and notes in the country
  • Regulating the Banking sector
  • Maintaining currency reserves
  • Acting as a banker and financial agent to the Government
  • Grants Banking Licenses to the Commercial Banks

Both the Bulgarian Central Bank and the European Central Bank work with a proper co-ordination. Presently the Bulgarian National Bank, with the signing of the Accession Treaty of the Republic of Bulgaria to the European Union, is set to become the observer country in the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).
