Banco de Portugal is the central bank of the Portugal. The bank was founded as to a royal charter of November 19th 1846. The bank was started with an objective that the bank will act as a commercial bank as well as central Bank.

The Bank is an integral part of the European System of Central Banks (ESCBs). The bank has been working with an objective of maintaining stability in the financial system.

Important objectives of the bank are as follows:

  • Manages the Foreign Exchange and gold reserves of the country
  • Acts as an intermediary in the monetary system
  • Functions as an advisor to the Government
  • Collects and compiles various data of the country

The Governing body of the bank includes the Governor, the Board of Directors, the Board of Auditors, and the Advisory Board.
